I’ve always been a fan of beauty devices, and treatments that use technology to improve the appearance of my skin. I started with devices specifically for the eye area to reduce dark circles, and then moved on to LED face masks, which I wanted to try because of their promise to brighten the complexion and stimulate collagen. At 38, I felt the need to invest in more devices with a specific anti-ageing action – in particular, gadgets that promise to lift and firm skin. This is where microcurrent comes into its own, as it acts directly on the muscles of the face, making them contract and relax – “training” them as you would the muscles in your body at the gym.
One name that kept cropping up in my research was Ziip Halo, a microcurrent and nanocurrent device for at-home use that A-listers including Jennifer Aniston, Margot Robbie and Kim Kardashian have been known to massage their faces with before they walk the red carpet. It promises instant lifting effects, and to improve the overall texture and appearance of the skin with consistent use over time. This prospect (and the celebrity seal of approval) persuaded me to trial it for two months.
How do microcurrent and nanocurrent work?
Ziip Halo uses “Dual Waveform” technology, which combines microcurrent and nanocurrent. Using different waveforms (26, to be precise) of these two types of current, it manages to reach different levels of depth in the skin, giving results from the very first session. The device is unique in combining the two types of current.
- Microcurrent is a higher frequency of low-level electrical currents that act on the muscles of the face to make them contract and relax, in order to tone them. Results last up to 72 hours.
- Nanocurrent is a much lower electrical current, and mimics the electrical impulses the brain sends to skin cells to support their function, collagen production, and cell regeneration, with the goal of rejuvenating the skin from the inside out. Results are visible within six weeks of consistent use.
Who is it suitable for?
- Those who want to achieve a skin firming and lifting effect, particularly around the jawline, nasolabial folds, cheekbones and eyebrow area.
- Anyone in search of an immediate lifting effect in preparation for a big occasion.
- If you’re looking to stimulate collagen production.
Pros (and one con)
- Results are immediately visible.
- The basic treatment takes only three minutes and is easy to incorporate into your existing skincare routine.
- It’s low effort.
- It promises to work immediately and over time, thanks to the combination of micro and nanocurrent.
- The microcurrent lifting effect lasts up to 72 hours, so maintaining it requires consistent use.

Does it hurt?
In short, no. You will feel a slight vibrating sensation in certain places on the face, such as near the eyebrows and hairline, and you will likely feel (and see!) a muscle contraction in the eye area.
